October Is Occupational Hearing Loss Prevention Month. ATL is participating in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiative to raise awareness about hearing health. Whether on the job or off the clock, protect your hearing – for life.

You might not think twice about the noise around you, but many everyday sounds are loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage. Here’s how they compare, and what you can do to protect your ears.

Fireworks / Gunshots: 140–175 dB = Louder than a jet engine at takeoff
Concerts / Nightclubs: 100–130 dB = Like standing next to a jackhammer
Sporting Events: 95–130 dB = Similar to a chainsaw or rock concert
Motorcycles / ATVs: 95+ dB = As loud as a subway train
Personal Audio Devices: 105–120 dB = Like having a rock concert in your ears
Power Tools (Drill, Leaf Blower): 100+ dB = As loud as a snowmobile or lawnmower
Blender / Vacuum: 85–90 dB = Comparable to city traffic
Danger Zone: Prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 dB can cause hearing loss. Some sounds (above 120 dB) can damage hearing instantly.

How to Protect Your Hearing
• Use Earplugs or Earmuffs: Especially at concerts, sports events, or when using power tools.
• Keep Headphones at 60% Max Volume: And take listening breaks!
• Limit Exposure Time: The louder it is, the less time your ears can handle it.
• Do the Shout Test: If you need to shout to be heard at arm’s length, it’s too loud.
Your hearing is priceless – and once it’s gone, it doesn’t come back. Compare, be aware, and protect your ears before the damage is done.
