It is estimated that there are approximately 60-70,000 deer collision accidents each year in New York state.  The majority of these accidents occur between the months of October and December when deer are most active, searching for food and mates.  Deer collisions may result in injury to the vehicle’s driver and/or passengers, as well as costly vehicle damage.  This time of year, we need to be extra cautious behind the wheel, particularly in areas where  deer are likely to be found.  Here are some tips to help avoid deer collision accidents:

  • SLOW DOWN! – Keeping your speed in check gives you a better chance of stopping in time if an animal darts into the road.
  • BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS AT DUSK AND DAWN – Deer are most active during these times of day.
  • SCAN THE ROAD AS YOU DRIVE – Watch the edges for wildlife about to cross. This is especially important on roads bordered by woods or fields.
  • USE YOUR HIGH BEAMS – When traveling on dark roadways to better see animals in the distance.
  • WHERE THERE IS ONE THERE’S PROBABLY MORE – Wildlife, deer especially, often travel in multiples. If you see one, be extra cautious for others in close proximity.
