Think Safety First - ATL

As students head back to school, our communities become busier—with more people on the roads, sidewalks, and near school campuses. Whether you’re driving, walking, biking, or supervising children, staying alert and making smart choices helps keep everyone safe – especially during construction season, when added hazards are present.

Safety Tips for Everyone:

  • Bus Safety: Always stop when a school bus has flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. Traffic must stop.
  • School Zones: Reduce your speed, obey speed limits, and watch for flashing school zone signs. Be prepared to stop for crossing guards and students entering crosswalks.
  • Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety: Children walking or biking to school may be distracted or unpredictable. Give them extra space, slow down, and stay alert.
  • Construction Awareness: Be cautious in work zones near schools. Watch for equipment, detours, reduced lanes, and workers.
  • Drop-Off & Pick-Up: Follow your school’s specific traffic flow procedures. Never double park, block crosswalks, or let children exit vehicles into traffic.
  • Stay Focused: Whether you’re behind the wheel, walking, or biking—avoid distractions. Put your phone away and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Student Safety Habits: Talk to kids about using crosswalks, staying on sidewalks, avoiding distractions while walking, and never darting into the street.

A safe school year starts with all of us – drivers, students, families, and workers – committed to staying aware and making smart choices.

Let’s work together to keep every school zone safe.
