July is UV Safety Awareness Month
While most enjoy the warmer temperatures that summer brings, it is important to be aware of the harmful effects that come with exposure to the sun’s rays. The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and exposure to that radiation on a person’s skin can cause a number of different health concerns including sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. With July being UV Safety Awareness Month ATL wants to take the opportunity to remind everyone how important it is to protect yourself from harmful UV radiation.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. Just a few minutes of sun exposure each day can add up over time, and put you at serious risk. Here are some tips to minimize your sun exposure and reduce your risk of skin damage:

o Stay in the shade as much as possible. If you are in the sun, wear protective clothing such as pants, long-sleeved shirts and a hat with a brim.
o Apply sunscreen to your exposed skin with an SPF of 30 or higher. Choose a “broad-spectrum” variety that will protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
o Limit your exposure during peak hours (10 am – 4 pm). UV radiation is typically highest during this period.
o An overcast sky doesn’t mean you are safe. Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate through clouds so use protection on cloudy days too.

Whether you’re working outdoors or enjoying a leisure activity, please make sure to limit your time in the sun, and to protect your skin against dangerous UV radiation.
