In 2024, NYSDOT removed Magnesium Sulfate 10-cycle Soundness (NYSDOT 703-07P,G) completely from coarse aggregate source approval testing and replaced the test with Freeze Thaw of Coarse Aggregate (NYSDOT 703-08-2). Additionally, test limits are based on NYSDOT No. 1 size coarse aggregate, removing the need to test NYSDOT No. 2 size aggregate for source approval.
For coarse aggregate source approval, sources historically approved for use in asphalt based on Magnesium Sulfate 10-cycle Soundness testing will continue to be approved based on Freeze-thaw testing within the historical range of each source. See table outlining testing requirements below, which was extracted from Materials Method 29, dated April 3, 2025.

Table of Coarse Aggregate tests from NYSDOT Materials Method 29, April 3, 2025

Based on NYSDOT Standard Specifications, Section 703-02, Coarse Aggregates must still meet the requirements of Table 703-2 Coarse Aggregate Physical Requirements (Testing), Table 703-3 Coarse Aggregates Physical Requirements (Deleterious Materials), and Table 703-4 Size of Crushed Bedrock, Gravel, and Slag. Table 703-2 still includes the 10-cycle Magnesium Sulfate Soundness (NY 703-07P,G).
