Winter weather can put outdoor workers at risk of frostbite, hypothermia, and cold stress, which can be life-threatening. Knowing the wind chill temperature helps workers prepare properly and perform tasks safely.

Follow these work practices to stay safe in cold weather:

  • Be aware of the signs of cold stress, including reddened skin, tingling, pain, swelling, leg cramps, numbness, and blisters.

  • Dress appropriately by wearing at least three layers of loose-fitting clothing, insulated gloves and boots, and a head covering.

  • Monitor your physical condition as well as that of your coworkers.

  • Stay dry and bring extra clothing, as moisture increases heat loss from the body.

  • Take frequent breaks in warm, dry locations.

  • Drink warm liquids regularly.
