ATL is participating in the National Work Zone Awareness Week. This occurs each spring at the start of construction season to promote safety in highway work zones. This year’s event runs from April 15-19, 2024, and is meant to remind all motorists of the importance of slowing down and paying careful attention when driving in work zones. ATL employees are often performing work along roadways and in work zones and we urge all travelers to please slow down and use caution when driving through them.

More than 40,000 people are injured, and several hundred are killed in work zone vehicle accidents yearly. By following these tips you can help to ensure the safety of highway workers, as well as yourself and your passenger(s):

  • Stay alert! Look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes, and workers.
  • Pay attention. Work zone signs will tell you what to expect ahead.
  • Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Traffic may slow or stop in an instant.
  • Minimize distractions. Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
  • Plan ahead for delays and allow extra travel time. Most digital navigation tools will provide alternate routes to avoid road work delays.
