As we look forward to the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, ATL wishes to honor and remember those who gave their lives in military service to the United States of America. As we celebrate this holiday, we will forever be indebted to those who sacrificed to ensure our enduring freedom.

For many, Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer season with the first of many barbecues, camping trips, concerts, swimming and boating excursions, and lots of other fun summer activities enjoyed with family and friends. It also marks the first big travel weekend of the summer season, with AAA projecting upwards of 44 million people across the country to be on the roadways. As we look forward to a joyous weekend filled with fun activities it is also important to keep safety in mind.

Here are some tips that will help you to have a healthy and enjoyable holiday weekend:

Driving Safety

  • Avoid distracted driving. Focus on the road, not on your phone or other distractions.
  • Plan for Traffic. The high volume of travelers will surely cause delays on the road. Plan accordingly.
  • Never drink and drive.

Grilling Safety

  • Inspect the hoses and tank of your gas grill for holes or leaks prior to starting it.
  • Keep your grill clean. Regularly cleaning the grilling surface and grease tray will reduce the risk of flare ups or grease fires.
  • Only use grills outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Never leave a lit grill unattended.

Water Safety

  • Actively supervise children and inexperienced swimmers in the water.
  • Never swim alone. Everyone, including experienced swimmers, should swim with a buddy.
  • Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when on a boat or in a situation beyond your skill level. Inflatable children’s toys can be fun, but are not a substitute for a life jacket.
  • Never operate any watercraft while impaired by alcohol.
