This weekend, many across America, and specifically across ATL will celebrate the Memorial Day holiday.  With Memorial Day, we most commonly see barbecues, picnics, and boat parties.  All of which are safe in general, but all come with some hazards that we want to try and avoid.  Here are a few tips to help you celebrate safely:

Grilling Safety Tips

  • Ensure the grill is cleaned of grease
  • Inspect propane fuel lines to ensure there are no cracks or leaks
  • Ensure the grill is positioned away from structures, trees, and high-traffic areas
  • Keep a fire extinguisher close by
  • Never leave a lit grill unattended
  • Ensure you utilize safe food preparation and storage techniques

Boating Safety Tips

  • Operate your boats at a safe speed at all times
  • Maintain awareness of other vessels around you
  • Wear a life jacket at all times
  • Understand and obey boating safety rules and regulations
  • Check the weather forecast prior to embarking on your outing
  • Never operate a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol

With Memorial Day weekend, people will also often indulge in some alcoholic beverages while celebrating the occasion.  People who do so should do so legally, responsibly, and follow these tips:

  • Know your limits
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water
  • If you plan to indulge, plan to be picked up or take a cab, do not drink and drive

If you follow these tips, your Memorial Day weekend celebrations will not only be safe, but they will be a blast for you and everyone who attends!

Celebrate safely everyone!
